 Fox consultant Ian Welch beat his personal best tench twice during a recent session on the Carp Society’s Horseshoe Lake in Lechlade, Glos with fish of 10lb 7oz and 11lb 2oz.
Ian set up in the shallow and weedy Summer Bay and spent time probing with a weed marker before finding a small patch of clean gravel backing onto weed at a range of around 50m which he baited with a spod mix comprising two pints of red maggots, a kilo of mixed 4 and 6mm Marine Halibut Pellets and a can each of hemp, tares and corn. |
 Using Duo-Lite Barbel Extra rods Ian set up a maggot feeders helicopter-style on 10lb Illusion line with short fluorocarbon hooklengths and size 14 Series 2 Carp Match hooks.
Hitting a slow and steady take at dusk Ian netted the first tench weighing in at 9lb 3oz and topped up the swim with a couple more spods of bait before dark. After a quiet night a couple more spods to refresh the swim at first light brought an early response with a powerful fish of 10lb 7oz to set a new PB for the species. The new best was not to last long though as within an hour another take resulted in a specimen of 11lb 2oz. |
