The Legered Deadbait Rig
Un-Known Author!
Legering a deadbait is a very widely used method for pike. Useful for medium to long range fishing or where float fishing is impractical due to restrictions of bankside vegetation. Also on waters where runs are few and far between or at night, giving the angler a chance to relax. There are many variations on this rig. This is the one I use most of the time for pike with the bait either on the bottom or popped up.

The Components
  • Wire trace

  • Large bore run rings and beads

  • Fox Sea Lead clip Code SAC014

  • Rubber sleeves. I cannibalise sleeves from the Fox lead core helicopter rig or those on the new paternoster traces, but these sleeves will soon be available in the Predator Range.

  • 3.25 oz (92 gm)
    weight.
    Torpedo shape for distance casting

Legered/Deadbait Rig
Assembley Instructions
Slide a large bore run ring and tapered bead up main line. Tie on wire trace. Push the tapered rubber bead over the trace swivel to form a buffer. Now make up a leger link...

The Ledger Link
Make up a leger link from 15lb mono, six inches longer than your wire trace with a Fox Sea Lead Clip at each end. Knotted to cause weak point which breaks if snagged. Rubber sleeves slide over each clip to prevent tangling.

Clip one end of your leger link to the large bore run ring. Cover with rubber sleeve to prevent tangling.

Clip 3.25 oz weight to other end of leger link and slide rubber sleeve over to prevent weed build up.
This rig is designed to be quickly assembled by using a ready stored leger link. For storage, detach the link and wrap it round a pole winder and store your links in a Fox reel spool pouch. They will house at least a dozen winders.

Better still, these links which are approx 24 inches long are also perfect for attaching to a standard paternoster rig in the same way with a suitable sized weight.

After casting out the deadbait, put the rod on rod rests and clip the line into a rear drop-off type alarm like the Micron P or PS. A very useful tip is to angle the rod to one side slightly and by doing so you will often see the rod tip twitching signalling an early warning of a run or when a very shy fish picks up the bait without pulling the line from the clip. You may then decide to clip up more delicately or adjust your rig to overcome this problem.
Useful Tip
The use of a large bore run ring minimises friction but also means that there is no need to remove your float stop when changing to a leger rig. It will pass through the ring without catching. You can quickly change back to float fishing without having to apply a new float stop.

Read and view step by step graphical instructions of this rig and much more in the excellent "Guide to Modern Pike Fishing".
